After 7 years of waiting for a chance to go down to Barnegat Lighthouse in New Jersey I finally got the chance.
The winds were very strong and the temperature was in the 20's. But the sky was clear so the morning light was gorgeous.
Male Harlequin Duck preening
The Harlquins did not dissapoint. Getting low angles was a challenge among the slippery rocks but I managed a few times.
The downside was that I got washed over by big waves every now and then!
Sometimes finding a special bird is easier then you think. On Saturday morning when I was out photographing my regular bird feeder visitors I noticed a bigger bird trotting along on the ground.
Imagine my excitement as I realized it was a Rusty Blackbird. The light conditions was very nice but the recent snow posed some difficult exposure concerns. What I ended up was to spot meter the snow and overexposed 1/3 to bring out the details of the darker bird.
Today I spent the majority of the morning photographing by my feeder station and the forrest nearby.
I was presented with numerous good opportunities but the favourite one was when a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk decided to make the patch of wood near our house it's daily hunting ground.
I was also able to get some artistic photos of Black Vultures which weren't easy to get but I was very pleased with the result.
It's been a long time since I updated the website. I've been very busy with my new work and haven't really had much spare time.
But hopefully that will change going forward. Especially since I have two trips coming up to Michigan where I expect to do a lot of photography.
Today I set out to stalk the birds at my feeder, where I managed to get this shot of a White-throated Sparrow.
I was finally able to get out and do some wildlife photography since the move to New York.
I followed the Rockland Audubon down to Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in New York. It was a great experience and shorebirds in great numbers.
While there I also got to see and photograph Eared Grebe for the first time. Although it was a great experience I have never crawled around in a more foul smelling goo then the mud and goose poop that made up the shoreline in the east pond.
Got a email today from the BBC Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. They informed me that I didn't win anything. I checked the status on my two entries that made it past the first screening and they both made it to the final stage.
I had one in the final for Bird Portrait and one in Bird Behavior
Very exciting to see my photos advance that far in such a well known competition.
I'll be back next year for sure.
Slowly getting settled in here in Nanuet, NY. Still waiting on our furniture but hopefully in a couple of days we will have everything in place.
So I haven't had time to do any photography the last couple of weeks.
But luckily for me I still have a bunch of photos from this spring in Michigan and Ohio that I haven't uploaded yet.
Currently you can find some of my photos displayed on Cornell Lab of Ornithology - All about birds as featured photographer of the month.
They also published my article about Stekenjokk. A roadside wilderness in Västerbotten, Sweden.
After missing the first fallout day at Crane Creek by one day I was determined to get down there no matter what.
I dropped of Alisha at work and then took the one hour drive down to Ohio.
Having never whitnessed a Warbler migration before I was just blown away at the sheer number of birds. The entire day I never got of the parking lot. Just moved a few yards back and forth to get in a little better position for the next warbler that hopped out in the open.
As a bird photographer this is as close to heaven as it gets.
Abundance of species of varying colors and shapes.
At times I it almost seemed like the trees were alive as they were so crowded with birds. And what was more amazing was the fact that the day before there were even more birds. Which I find hard to believe....
Be sure to visit the Avian Gallery for more photos.
Found a sapsucker well site on my daily walk in Van Buren Park.
Since the warbler action was very low I decided to wait to see if it would return.
4 hours of waiting finally paid off.
I tried to include the wells in the photo as they are so unique to the sapsuckers.
Finally there is a little bit of spring activity in the forrests of Michigan.
Warblers are slowly starting to show up. Found this Pine Warbler 10 minutes from home.
Also saw Palm, Black-throathed Green and Yellow-rumped Warblers but no photos of them that I was happy with.
Check the avian section for the latest spring arrivals
Took a quick evening session at Crosswinds Marsh to try and make the most of the sunset light.
Not much bird activity but some Mute Swan and Red-winged Blackbird photos ended up in the archive.
Spent a day with Bruce M. Bowman down in Ohio birding and taking photos. The warbler migration haven't started yet but with the upcomming warmspell it should start very soon.
I was very excited about getting some Blue-winged Teal photos though.
More photos in the avian gallery.
After missing it on monday I finally found the red-throated loon at Metro Beach Metropark today. It was very easy to work with but a boat that was heading out of the marina spooked it so it moved out to more open water.
More photos in the avian gallery.
After a tip I headed over to Nichols Arboretum to try and find and photograph Yellow Bellied Sapsuckers
After a bit of searching I did find two males fighting over the holes in the bark.
One of the males was driven away from the feeding spot and things settled down a bit.
As luck would have it a female soon showed up and the male was soon gone in pursuit.
I was about to head on home when I caught a glimpse of a Red-tailed Hawk landing in a nearby tree.
Quickly I gathered my gear and walked over where I had seen the hawk land.
Sure enough It was sitting there, totally unafraid of me!
So I spent 2 hours following the hawk around as it hunted mice and snakes over a small meadow.
It failed a few times on mice but managed to kill and eat two snakes before it finally decided to leave.
